Dr Philip MacDougall is a much-published author on the subject of naval shore-based facilities. The mystery of what happened to the long-lost navy of King Harold could now be solved. In the autumn of 1066, on the eve of the Battle of Hastings, this powerful fleet of not less than twenty warships (in design, much like a Viking longboat) returned to its home waters of Chichester Harbour. From that point onwards, the entire fleet, its crew and shore-side support buildings, simply disappeared completely from the annals of history. The “why” is easy to answer: the crews were required to fight at Hastings and the victors of the battle, the Normans, had no particular use for a battle fleet. What happened to the fleet has until now remained a mystery.
The key, of course, is Chichester Harbour. In walking the shores and noting the features of the tidal area, Philip has combined this with his broader knowledge of the area and further desk-based research to identify the site of what he believes is the original late-Saxon harbour that was used by Earl Godwin and his lost fleet of warships.
Personally, I am very excited to understand Philip’s findings as I have been looking at this site for many years without understanding the significance of the shape of the shoreline. Please join us in our exploration for what promises to be a fascinating and enjoyable evening.
